Pancakes are a favorite treat almost in every family, especially popular they become seven days before Lent, when everybody is celebrating Shrovetide (Maslenica) and enjoying pancakes as a symbol of this week. 

Running from September 23 to 25 in Ziedonis hall of National Library of Latvia, Rīga, and Mark Rothko Art Centre, Daugavpils the 111th birthday celebrations of admirable artist Mark Rothko will take place. This project is one of the constituent parts of “Rīga 2014” events programme “Okeāna alkas” (Longing for the Ocean).

The symbol of Daugavpils. An outstanding fortification that occupies more than 150 ha. The only early 19th century fortress in Eastern Europe that has remained virtually unchanged. 

Daugavpils Mark Rothko Art Centre is a multifunctional complex of contemporary art, culture and education situated in the Arsenal building at Daugavpils Fortress. It is the only place in Eastern Europe where the original masterpieces of the famous painter and the founder of the abstract expressionism Mark Rothko can be seen. 

"Daugavpils Beauty 2014" exhibition will tale place from 14.03.2014 until 16.03.2014 at the Daugavpils Olympic Centre.

On 6-8 February 2014, Riga will host the "Balttour" forum - the opening event of the leading travel trade fair in the Baltics, "Balttour 2014" - which will be attended by more than 350 tourism professionals from more than 15 European and Central Asian countries.
National park "Braslav Lakes" has invited bids on buying red deer. Total purchase amounts about one billion roubles.   
Latvia joined the euro area on 1 January 2014. On that date the euro replaced the lats at the fixed exchange rate of €1 = LVL 0.702804. There will be a two-week period when both currencies are in circulation, with change normally provided in euro. The lats will cease to be legal tender on 15 January 2014.

10-11 December 2012 the 3rd workshop of cross-border product development of the Action LLB-1-098 „Fostering Capacity for Tourism Development in Latgale-Utena-Vitebsk Cross Border Region” (BELLA DVINA2) took place in the conference hall of the Belarusian Book Printing Museum in Polotsk.  
Belarus is negotiating the possibility of simplifying visa requirements with the European Union countries. Archaeologists explore a settlement in Vitebsk region which belongs to the Viking epoch. It is assumed that the site dates back to the 10-11th century. Several dozens artifacts have been already found. These are not only household articles, but also various adornments. So, the participants of the expedition are ready to dig deeper.

Open crayfishing festival took place in Polotsk district on July, 22. The festival  brought together amateurs of unusual trade from Belarus and Russia. It was organized by the Department for Sport and Tourism of Polotsk District Executive Committee

13-14 of  July brought festive mood to all the citizens of Kraslava and to its visitors. The city celebrated its holiday.The Daugava Festival got together more than 300 sportsmen from Latvia, Lithuania and Belarus. It was one of the most visited festivals held in Kraslava for the last years.

On 1-3 June 2012, Polotsk will host a Festival of Medieval Culture “Rubon” as part of its 1150th anniversary festivities.  Participants of the festival will include enthusiasts from medieval reenactment clubs of Belarus, Russia, Ukraine, Czech Republic, Poland, Lithuania, as well as folk craftsmen from Latvia.

Daugavpils County invites every guest of our region to traditional open-air folk-art festival “Augšdaugava 2016” which will take place in the picturesque bend of Daugava river, holding ethnographic Old-believers’ village Slutišķi on 22th of May. The programme will be special this year, because the event is dedicated to 30th anniversary of beginning of struggle against the Soviet plans to build the hydroelectric plant on Daugava river and to drown the Slutišķi and other villages as well as many nature values on river banks. The festival will be introduced by Saint Service in Spruktu Roman Catholic Church of St. Anthony (beginning at 10:00), everybody is warmly invited. The programme will continue at 11:30 in Slutišķi village.

Every year in June, Daugavpils organises one of the city’s main cultural events, the Daugavpils City Festival. During the festival, the city’s birthday is celebrated with an extensive programme of festivities. For a whole week, in various locations around the city, cultural, sporting, and recreational events take place, as do markets and activities for children. During these days, the city becomes a meeting place for several thousands of people from Latvia and abroad. In 2015, Daugavpils’ 740th anniversary will also be celebrated. 

Concerts

The acclaimed pianist and composer Carlos Cipa from Germany shall give one of his three performances in Latvia at Daugavpils Mark Rothko Art Centre on April 4, 2014.
