International folk-art festival “Augšdaugava 2016”

Daugavpils County invites every guest of our region to traditional open-air folk-art festival “Augšdaugava 2016” which will take place in the picturesque bend of Daugava river, holding ethnographic Old-believers’ village Slutišķi on 22th of May. The programme will be special this year, because the event is dedicated to 30th anniversary of beginning of struggle against the Soviet plans to build the hydroelectric plant on Daugava river and to drown the Slutišķi and other villages as well as many nature values on river banks. The festival will be introduced by Saint Service in Spruktu Roman Catholic Church of St. Anthony (beginning at 10:00), everybody is warmly invited. The programme will continue at 11:30 in Slutišķi village.

The motto of the event will be “Draw inspiration in Augšdaugava!” this year, therefore come and get inspired for your life, work and love with blossoms of May, sprouting leaves, sparkling and rippling water of Daugava and small streams, from songs, dances, colourful national costumes and handicrafts!   

The programme includes concerts, exhibitions, interactive events, masterclasses, educational and sport activities, fair of handicrafts and local food, as well as special activities for children. The programme will be special this year, because the event is dedicated to 30th anniversary of beginning of struggle against the Soviet plans to build the hydroelectric plant on Daugava river and to drown the Slutišķi and other villages as well as many nature values on river banks. The special guests will be famous publicist Dainis Īvāns, writer Nora Ikstena, poet Anna Rancāne, and other. “The decision of Mikhail Gorbatchev was announced at 1987 – to stop the construction of hydroelectric plant, although already 20 million rubles were invested here. We won.” D. Īvāns.

The festival will be introduced by Saint Service in Spruktu Roman Catholic Church of St. Anthony (beginning at 10:00), everybody is warmly invited. The programme will continue at 11:30 in Slutišķi village. You can find the Slutišķi village, following the direction signs from Daugavpils. The cars should be left at several parking lots, following the direction signs and instructions of staff.

Specially Protected Nature Area “Daugavas loki” and “Augšdaugava” – the place of event

The Slutišķi village is situated in the very heart of Specially protected landscape area „Augšdaugava” (“Upper Daugava”) with included Nature park „Daugavas loki” (“the Bends of the Daugava River”). This area is characterised by various values – the plenty of rare plants, animals, and habitats, outstanding landscapes, cultural history objects, national traditions and evidence of geological history. The history of the area created here the unique multicultural and multi-language environment. This area is also part of Natura 2000 Specially protected nature area network of European Union importance, as well as included in Tentative List of UNESCO World Heritage.
